~があります/います
JLPT GRAMMAR

Meaning: to exists, present (….है।)

This sentence pattern is used to indicate the existence or presence of a thing (s) or a person(s) and those are treated as subject and marked by が.

ありますis used when what is present is inanimate or does not move itself. Things, plants and places belong in this category. While います is used, when what is present is animate and moves by itself. People and animals belong in this category.

Example sentences:

  • 机の上にコンピューターがあります。
  • Tsukue no ue ni konpyūtā ga arimasu.
  • There is a computer on the desk.
  • डेस्क पर एक कंप्यूटर है।
  • あそこに電話があります。
  • Asoko ni denwa ga arimasu.
  • There is a phone over there.
  • वहां पर एक फोन है।
  • そこに公園があります。
  • Soko ni kōen ga arimasu.
  • There is a park there.
  • वहां एक पार्क है।
  • あそこに男の人がいます。
  • Asoko ni otoko no hito ga imasu.
  • There is a man over there.
